The $100,000 Bill: Workforce Institute at Kronos Survey Pinpoints Cost of a New Labor Regulation
Small and Large Businesses Alike Need More Support to Maintain Compliance
LOWELL, Mass., Sep 05, 2017
As the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives return to session today, a new survey from The Workforce Institute at Kronos Incorporated and Future Workplace reveals it can cost organizations as much as $100,000 each time a federal, state, or even local labor-related regulation is created or changed.
“The $100,000 Bill” report is based on a national survey of 812 human resources (HR) and payroll professionals in management, senior leadership, and the C-suite, and examines how the process of turning compliance-focused legislation into actionable internal policy impacts the workforce, HR and payroll professionals, and what can be done to improve this challenging process.

Kronos Cloud, Shift to SaaS Continues to Transform the Business
Santa Fe, New Mexico, Jul 1, 2017
It was a minute before 8 on a recent Friday morning. Rita Arellano was early and ready to go to work at City Hall.
“Am I always here at 7:59? No,” said Arellano, who works in the mailroom. “Sometimes I’m here a little bit earlier, but I’ve never been late.”
While Arellano may be a conscientious employee who always shows up to work on time, the city no longer has to take her at her word.
In April, the city started to roll out a new computer-based timekeeping system that forces employees to punch in and punch out, creating a precise and paperless record of hours worked.
The new system, designed by Massachusetts-based Kronos Inc., was implemented to boost productivity and increase efficiency.
“I’ve never seen the [employee] parking lot so full at 8 in the morning,” a high-level city administrator said privately.

CHELMSFORD, Mass. — Following its annual December board of advisors meeting, The Workforce Institute at Kronos Incorporated identified the top trends that will impact the global workforce in 2017. Board members also recorded videos of personal predictions that they believe will shape human capital management (HCM) and workforce management this year.
Top Workplace Trends for 2017
The year of the middle manager: Organizations spend a lot of time and money at the top developing a strategic vision, while human resources remains focused on engaging employees. Yet organizations often neglect the tip of the spear: their middle managers. Managers have the greatest impact on overall company performance, for better or for worse. It is often said that employees join companies, but leave managers. 2017 will see a renewed focus on giving people managers – many of whom are Millennials managing for the first time – the skills, abilities, tools, and technologies needed to develop connections with their employees, nurture top talent, and execute the organization’s vision on the front lines. Organizations should also consider developing manager onboarding programs to set new people managers up for success while providing avenues for employees to give feedback about their manager to ensure leadership practices are in line with the organization’s values.

After making its bones building and renting time clocks, that's a difficult transition to make, especially changing public perception. But in more than annual revenue, Kronos has finally done it, and here's how.

CHELMSFORD, Mass. — A new global study from The Workforce Institute at Kronos Incorporated and Coleman Parkes Research found that U.S. businesses waste $687 billion per year on unnecessary administrative work, significantly more than any other country. That equates to an estimated cost of $4,554 per employee, per organization on burdensome tasks that are not directly related to employees’ core job roles.2
The study, “The $687 Billion Question,” also found that the U.S. workforce is hindered by complexity, low productivity, and poor-performing technology. The research was conducted by The Workforce Institute at Kronos and Coleman Parkes Research, and included a survey as well as extensive interviews with HR professionals, operations/line of business managers, and employees.
Treating employees as an asset rather than a commodity is essential for true workforce engagement. It’s a critical factor in attracting and retaining the best talent possible in a competitive job market. However, manual administrative tasks unrelated to employees’ core job roles creates a time-consuming burden can lead to disengagement. Instead, organizations should re-evaluate these processes to empower employees to deliver their best as part of a broader engagement strategy.
- Bridging the engagement gap: Technology can be turned into an advantage, but out-of-date solutions will only add more unnecessary complexity.

Posted by Lisa Disselkamp on May 19, 2016 — Do you know if you are spending more on payroll than necessary? The question goes beyond conducting an audit to find errors and fraud. The deeper question to ask is this: Is there unnecessary labor expense that is not the result of a mistake or abuse but has become a source of overspending? Many employers don’t know if they are suffering from inflated time-worked reporting or hidden, unproductive paid time. Without oversight, employers are likely to be paying incorrect (i.e., unnecessary, unintended) time correctly, instead of paying the correct time correctly.
From Inc. —
Human resources is the only function that touches all of the people inside of an organization. So why is it usually the smallest team?
I am constantly amazed at the size of human resource teams that companies continue to have. The small amount of resources that HR people and talent related functions receive, especially at massive global organizations, is quite shocking! In an organization with 50-100 thousand employees or more, it is not uncommon for the HR team to be only 100 or so people to support all of those employees. I don't know these HR people do it but they really are magicians. I'm wondering what would happen if HR was the biggest team instead of sales or marketing. If we devoted the most people and resources to HR, how would an organization be restructured? more...
From Working Smarter Cafe — ... There are some things we shouldn’t procrastinate on, and being compliant with the law is right up there. In the case of the impending FLSA rule changes on a new, higher minimum salary threshold for “exempt” employees, the deadline is coming up December 1, so the time to address the issue is NOW. Why now? Well, it’s estimated the average wage and hour settlement is in the $6.9 million range. I pulled that number from this excellent Forbes article on steps you can take to prepare.
Of course if you’re a Kronos Workforce Central (WFC) user, we can assist during the different stages of your planning and remediation: more...
From Business Today — Companies and businesses have always tried to measure productivity. In the early days one simple way was to have a punch-in time clock machine for employees. In 1977, an MIT alumni, Mark Ain put together one such clock and thus was born Kronos Inc, which even today is one of the largest players selling workforce management solutions.
Today Kronos sells software and services for scheduling, time & attendance, HR & Payroll management, hiring and labour management. Mark's brother Aron, who now runs the $1.2-billion company, was in India recently when BT's Venkatesha Babu spoke to him. Kronos India has not only a large employee base serving its global customers but also counts the likes of Mahindra & Mahindra, Ultratech Cement, Bharat Forge, Croma and GMR Group amongst its marquee customers. Aron spoke of Kronos evolution and the India opportunity. more...

All of these benefits help the hospital manage to budget and deliver high-quality patient care.
Natividad Medical Center's trauma center is a vital community service that saves lives and eliminates the need to fly critically injured patients to distant trauma centers. The emergency department sees more than 52,000 patients each year, one-third of which are children.
Given that manual, administrative workforce management processes were taking staff away from patient care, the hospital selected Kronos time and attendance, scheduling, workforce analytics, human resources, and absence management solutions. To provide employees and managers added flexibility in how they complete their workforce management tasks, the hospital also selected Kronos mobile and tablet applications. more...

FACT SHEET: Growing Middle Class Paychecks and Helping Working Families Get Ahead By Expanding Overtime Pay
May. 18, 2016
Every week, millions of Americans work more than 40 hours a week but do not receive the overtime pay they have earned. Tomorrow, the Department of Labor will be finalizing a rule to fix that by updating overtime protections for workers. In total, the new rule is expected to extend overtime protections to 4.2 million more Americans who are not currently eligible under federal law, and it is expected to boost wages for workers by $12 billion over the next 10 years.
For much of the 20th century, the 40-hour workweek was a pillar of economic security for working families. The rules of the road were simple: if you were called on to put in extra work, your employer had to pay you extra regardless of whether you received an hourly wage or a salary. more...
